In the state of Massachusetts, you are allowed to obtain a Junior Operator License at the age of 16 ½. A Junior Operator License or JOL is provided to any driver under the age of 18 allowing them to operate a vehicle under the following restrictions: A driver with a JOL license cannot have a passenger unless it’s an immediate family member or a licensed driver over the age of 21. Additionally, a driver with a JOL license cannot operate a vehicle between the hours of 12am-5am unless accompanied by a licensed driver over the age of 21.
In addition to these restrictions, it is important to know that the consequences for traffic violations are more severe for drivers with a JOL license. Violations while operating with a JOL license can result in spiked insurance rates, large fines, and license suspension. A first offense for violation of aforementioned restrictions, seat belt laws, or use of a mobile device can result in a 60 day suspension. A speeding violation is treated more severely. It can result in a 90 day suspension, and requires that the driver take the Driver Attitudinal Retaining Course and complete the State Courts Against Road Rage program.
We understand the implications that a violation or license suspension can have personally, and financially. An attorney can help you navigate this process. If you, or someone you know is dealing with any of these issues, reach out to Briones Law Group and we can assist you with your case.
